With disturbing headlines about domestic violence so often in the news, it's not difficult to understand the damaging situations victims of family violence frequently face. People may not realize that pets in violent homes are often hurt, too.
Animals in these situations are silent victims, who may be threatened, injured or killed by a violent family member to control or intimidate other members of the household. Just like people, animals need a safe haven too.
Nearly half of the women entering shelters for protection from domestic violence say their pet has been threatened, injured or killed by their partner, according to several
surveys. Perhaps even worse for the women involved, some report they have delayed leaving their homes because they feared for their pets' safety.
That's in part why The Humane Society of the United States has designated April 18-
"We want to bring this message to all communities while also offering solutions to
help human service and animal protection professionals establish Safe Havens for
Animals™ programs," says Virginia-
These programs involve collaborative relationships between domestic violence shelters, animal care and control agencies, animal shelters , veterinarians, and even private boarding kennels to provide safe, temporary housing for pets who come from violent homes.


The shelter always welcomes donations of all kinds! If you have something that you wish to donate, but need it picked up, call the shelter and someone will make arrangements for you.
